In the 1st century AD, Dioscordides recommended a recipe containing a mixture of hyssop, figs, rue, honey, and water for treating multiple conditions. For example, pleurisy, asthma, tight-chestedness, respiratory congestion, and chronic coughs.

Has been used for centuries (if not longer) as a cleaning, clearing, and purification herb, certainly when used as incense. Use in baths to wash away the evil eye, or baneful magic. In addition, use after cursing and hexing to cleanse the practitioner of any repercussions. Use hyssop in protective sachets or likewise, carry it with you for the same purpose.
